The Terraces Waiheke
With over 500 Olive trees and 9 different varieties on site we don't just offer accommodation, we will soon be offering Olive Oil as well. Our picking season runs from mid May to mid June depending on type and location on the site. This years harvest however will focus on two main areas. The lower southern grove, known as the Potiki Grove, and the upper Northern groves, Terrace One and Terrace Two. This should provide a good blend of olives for this years Olive Oil yield, which is pressed for us locally at Rangihoua Estate on the Te Whau peninsular.
Once the harvest is over, all 500 plus trees will be individually pruned and prepared for the winter. Winters on the island bring a lot of growth at the Terraces. The regular rain followed by the clear bright days sees the grasses, trees and hedges flourish. It’s important to give the site one last tidy up before July kicks in as it may be the last time before October the ground is dry enough to do it properly again.
July to October is growing season at The Terraces, but this year it is also reclamation season with our Western slope Olive grove and the very lower Potiki Grove. Due to poor accessibility issues on the Western slope we hadn’t been able to maintained this grove for over a year, causing the neighbouring natives to start encroaching on the grove and begin to take over the Olives. The area to be reclaimed is approximately 2 acres and will take the majority of the winter.
In October when spring is really kicking in all 500 plus olive trees will be checked again for any damage from the winter winds and pruned where required, and this will be the last time they are touched until the next years harvest. We are hoping for a good year for the Upper Potiki Grove in 2020, this is the Grove next to Rangi and Papa Yurts. The trees here are very exposed to the South Westerly winds and haven’t reached full maturity yet but are close to producing a small but good crop with youthful flavours that will blend well with the more mature Lower Potiki Grove.
In November and December the focus will be maintenance and future development on the site. All the grasses will be cut, and areas for planting identified. However The main focus in this period will be on how to maximise the experience of our guests here at The Terraces.
Our goal for 2020, having identified areas of improvement, is execution. We are aware today’s guests want a unique experience and we aim to provide that. Firstly we are hoping to further plant out the steep bank between the three yurts with natives and flaxes. This will attract more wildlife and birds as well as improving the aesthetic look of pathways to the yurts. Secondly we aim to develop at least one scenic walkway for guests around the property, including seating areas to enjoy the varying views, and platforms for local artists and photographers to capture those fantastic views. And finally we want to take guest feedback and ideas to continue to create a unique and fantastic experience for everyone who stays here at The Terraces Waiheke.
